Music has no language. It is universal and it can speak to your soul! “Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours.” – Sir Elton John.

The Indian Music Experience

A music museum is a great place to introduce your children to the world of music. Luckily, India’s only interactive music museum is right here in Bengaluru! Plan a visit to the Indian Music Experience (IME) in JP Nagar, for an immersive experience with their 9 internationally-designed exhibit galleries, storyboards and artefacts. Listen to music in all languages and check out the musical installations! It’s one incredible experience, right here in your city!

The IME has a Learning Centre where children and adults can enrol in music classes ranging from vocals to various instruments. Also choose to celebrate your child’s music themed birthday in the Sound Garden with musical installations and activities.

Here are 10 amazing things you would love to do at IME

  1. Visit the Sound Garden where there are 10 musical installations for your child to explore. Kids can make their own music on the xylophones, gongs and bells. Don’t miss trying your hand at the singing stone. It looks deceptively simple when the guide does it, but it’s not so easy to make a stone sing!
  2. Immerse yourself in a Wraparound Theatre. Watch a 5 minute animated introductory film that encapsulates the entire journey of Indian music. This one is a visual and auditory delight!
  3. Kids will enjoy watching a documentary on indie rock music inside the brightly painted auto-rickshaws at the Gallery of Contemporary Expressions. Also, watch your child turn into a DJ as they mix Indian and Western sounds at the Hybrid Sounds Interactive.
  4. Lie on the floor together and gaze up at the sky in the Samay Chakra Theatre. Catch snatches of morning, evening and midnight ragas of Hindustani music, while watching a day in the life of India.
  5. Kids will love the brightly colored String Puppets in the section on folk songs.  Spend some time listening to songs from all over the country. These songs celebrate festivals, tell stories of legendary heroes and commemorate birth, puberty and death!

  6. Don’t miss this great opportunity to view the stunning Instruments Gallery that features a diverse collection of over a 100 instruments! There are touch-screens that show you each instrument in 360 degree views and you can listen to what they sound like.
  7. Kindle the patriot spirit in your child by listening to iconic songs from India’s freedom struggle at the Songs of Struggle Gallery. Together you can discover lesser known poets and singers who used music to protest injustice.
  8. Can you imagine Gabbar Singh’s iconic “Arre O Samba! Kitne aadmi they” scene as a comedy? The background score interactive in the section on Hindi films playfully demonstrates how a background score can manipulate our emotions. Change the tone of a scene from melodrama, to comedy, to thriller.
  9. Get your kids to pose at the Gramophone Set Photo op, where they can step back into the 1920s, where the gramophone occupied pride of place at homes and brought the entire neighbourhood together.
  10. Have fun together as a family singing your favourite Bollywood song at the recording studio in the Gallery of the Stars. You also get to change the backing track, design your album cover and email it to yourself as a lasting reminder of your deep dive into the world of music!
