Bring the magic of Eid into your homes with these 9 beautiful books on Ramzan for kids.
Ramzan is a special time at Muslim homes. My 6-year-old loves this period, especially the evenings, when we have special Iftaar feast every single day. Since she loves her books, and the best way to introduce the concept of Eid is through Ramzan books for kids, here’s how I taught her about this festival.
We all know that this is a month where we fast from sunset to sunrise, every single day. There are many other things that we do during Ramzan, besides fasting, which children are curious about, and books beautifully make this time come alive for kids. Listed below are some amazing books I have been reading with my little one, and we love them.
9 Ramzan books for kids that you’d love
1. My First Ramadan by Karen Katz
Age: 1 years+
This is a perfect book for your littlest ones. A great picture book about Ramzan, written by the amazing Karen Katz.
2. It’s Ramadan, Curious George by H. A. Rey
Age: 2 years+
Curious George is curious when his friend, Kareem, doesn’t eat anything before sunset and gets up at sunrise and eats. He sees people preparing treats and talking about Ramzan. Many of your little one’s questions about Ramzan will be answered with this one.
3. Ramadan Moon by Na’ima B. Robert
Age: 4 years+
I love this one because it talks about the pre-Ramzan excitement and anticipation beautifully. Ramzan never starts all of a sudden, just like that. It all starts when the Ramzan Moon is sighted. The illustrations are beautiful and different which make the book more appealing to young readers.
4. Under the Ramadan Moon by Sylvia Whitman
Age: 4 years+
The lyrical, repeated text makes this one a great read aloud as well. It is a simple book with some beautiful illustrations. It doesn’t overwhelm the reader with lots of information, so it’s great for younger kids.
5. Ismat’s Eid by Fawzia Gilani-Williams
Age: 4 years+
Ismat’s Eid is a Turkish folktale which I remember reading and loving in school; my daughter loved it as much. Ismat a shoemaker, buys a pair of pyjamas for Eid, besides gifts for all the others in the family. What he doesn’t know is his day would turn into an unexpected & funny ride. Will the family be ready to celebrate Eid together?
6. Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of Colors by Hena Khan
Age: 4 years+
What I love about this one are the illustrations and the use of colours. This beautiful picture book brings Islamic traditions and Ramzan alive. It talks about everyday things in a Muslim household and the beautiful colours and patterns.
7. Lailah’s Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story by Reem Faruqi
Age: 6 years+
This is the best book on the topic I have come across, which can be read aloud to a whole class. It is a story about Lailah, who has recently shifted to Georgia. It talks about her first Ramzan in a new city, with new friends and Lailah is worried what her new friends will think of her fasting. Lunch time becomes a nightmare where the smell of food makes her run from her class and take refuge in the school library. It is an amazing picture book about fasting and Ramzan for kids.
8. The White Nights of Ramadan by Maha Addasi
Age: 7 years+
The book talks about “the three whites” or the nights of full moon, and a night before and after the full moon night. These “three whites” are celebrated in Persia and the book revolves around these nights. I wasn’t aware of ‘the three whites’ before I read The White Nights of Ramadan.
9. The Best Eid Ever by Asma Mobin-Uddin
Age: 7 years+
It is a beautiful book explaining the concept of Ramzan to young readers; it explains the basics and you can use this as a starting point. It is a heartwarming story about Aneesa who thinks Eid is not special anymore sitting miles away from home, away from her parents. That is till her granny sends her some special Eid gifts from Pakistan. The book also highlights sharing things with people, which is a very important aspect of Ramzan.
