Summers are still on and there’s no better time than now to whip up some delicious DIY ice cream at home with the kids! Don’t be daunted, making ice-cream is not as difficult as it sounds and besides from being super easy, it’s a very popular treat among the little…and not so little ones as well. In this article, I have put together a quick, healthy ‘dessert craving fix’, which can be made with basic supplies that are readily available at home and no fancy ingredients. In fact it’s so simple that you can even involve your kids in making it.
We begin by making the base ice cream which can then be used to come up with exciting new flavours. As you read on, you’ll find that I’ve listed quite a few ways in which this ice cream can be varied and made into something yummy!
Ace The Base – Steps for Making the Basic Banana Ice Cream
- 2-3 overripe, frozen bananas (great way to use up those which you would otherwise have thrown away!)
- Optional milk of choice, if needed
- Pinch of salt
- Sweetener like honey or maple syrup (only if required)
Step 1: Start with bananas that are turning brown. Peel and cut into large pieces, then freeze in an airtight bag like a Ziplock or container. (You can freeze a whole bunch at once so they’re ready whenever you want to make banana ice cream.)
Step 2: To make the ice cream, mix around 2-3 frozen bananas into a blender or food processor—adding a pinch of salt. You can add 2-4 tbsp milk of choice for smoother blending if desired—and blend until you achieve a soft-serve texture.
Step 3. 3 easy steps and you basic Banana ice-cream is ready. You can serve immediately, or transfer to a container and freeze an additional 30 minutes, then scoop out with an ice cream scoop.
Now, here comes the fun part. You can take this base ice-cream and add some different ingredients to make a variety of new flavours. The base ice-cream remains the same as mentioned above, all you need to do is add in that one thing that makes it go WOW!
