Here’s a simple and fun paper kite that is perfect for kids from the age of 2 to 9. You could even get your kids to decorate their paper first before you follow these instructions.
Step by step instructions for making an easy colourful paper kite
- You’ll need one piece of paper, a ruler, a pencil, some thread/string, stapler and a punching machine.
- Fold your paper in half.
- Along the folded side of your paper, measure and mark off 2 1/2 inches (point A) and 3 1/2 inches (point B).
- Take the top left corner of your paper and bring it to point A. Do remember not to crease it.
- Pick up your paper carefully while holding the first corner in place on your pencil mark (point A). Grab the other side of the paper and fold it down to mirror the first fold.
- Make sure they are aligned to your mark.
- Staple these corners in place. This is important as this will help in holding your kite in the air.
- Attach a tail to the other end of your kite if you wish, as this will add stability.
- Punch a hole where you made the second mark (point B). Loop one end of your kite string through the hole and knot it.
- For the final touch, cut out different coloured bows about 2″ in size and attach it to the string.
- You could also twist the design of the kite to look like this.
- Your kite is ready to fly! We hope you enjoyed it, because we sure did!

- Use a square shaped colourful paper to form the body of your kite. Fold the paper in half diagonally.

- Place your skewers/ stick or simple straw vertically at the centre of the crease and paste it. Make sure it is aligned with the corners of your paper.
- Place your second skewer horizontally onto the paper making a cross or a ‘t’ shape. Again do make sure it is aligned with the corners of your paper. You could use a small piece of double sided tape to ensure the stability of the sticks.
- Pierce 4 tiny holes alongside the junction of the stick. Please refer to the image above.
- Cut out 3, 4″ long kite strings and tie 3 knots onto the kite.
- Now that the main body of the owl is ready feel free to decorate it as your child wishes. Here’s what we did!
