Cue a birthday party or a play date and what do you get? Kids at home with a lot of extra energy to work off! Keeping a bunch of kids happily occupied is an art as well as an exercise for the brain to strengthen its IQ/EQ skills. So here are a few ideas we could think of that might come in handy at a playdate or a birthday party.

What could be more joyful than the mirthful laughter of kids at play? All of these can be played indoors with a minimum amount of preparation. Doesn’t that sound fun already?

1. Pictionary

Things you will need

  • Pictionary cards customized for the group of kids you are handling
  • A big chalkboard or a white board
  • Dustless Chalks/a couple of whiteboard markers
  • Timer/hourglass

How to play

  • You can either use the board game available in the stores – or make your own.
  • The kids can be split into two teams and each member gets a turn.
  • The kids take turns from each team to pick the game card and draw the corresponding picture on the board.
  • The team gets a point if they guess the word right before the timer goes off.
  •
It’s a fun way to engage them and also a good team activity.

2. Vocabo

  • A game conductor – adult
  • Vocabo Board Game or make your own game cards

How to play

  • The kids get to pick a category by spinning the arrow on the board.
  • Depending on where the arrow stops the category is chosen.
  • The game conductor picks a card from the category and reads it out.
  • The kid who gets the turn has to guess the word on the card within a minute.
  • The kid, who guesses the word correctly, earns a point.

I have tried this game for a group of 5-8 yrs old and it was a hit.

3. Treasure Hunt

Things you will need

  • Little slips of paper
  • Couple of felt pens
  • A small gift – treasure

How to play

  • A group of kids can be on the clue-making team and the other group can hunt for the treasure with the help of these clues.
  • The kids can draw pictures to give clues. If,for example, the next clue is placed under the bed, the kids can draw a representation of bed. It could be behind the TV, or in the drawer or any interesting nooks that they can think of. (Trust me they will come up with such lovely ideas to hide the clues.)
  •

The other group who hunts for clues should be able to find the treasure in the time you set for them. Be prepared for some running around and squeals as they do.

4. Enact a Story

Things you will need

  • Pick a story that the group is familiar with
  •
Ask them to choose the roles or you assign to avoid quarrels
  • A couple of clothes, accessories etc. to dress for the character (optional)
  • A video camera to capture all the fun

How to play

  • The kids can pick the story and enact it in a fun way with costumes and dialogues.
  • Choose a simple story that everybody is familiar with: for instance – Jack and the Beanstalk, The Rabbit and The Tortoise, The Thirsty Crow, Three Little Pigs etc.
  • Depending on the group size and preferences, choose the story.
  • Pick a story that has five characters or fewer. This is better to retain attention and also for easy handling of the scenes.
  • This is a perfect way for the adults also to join in. Hey, you could be the Giant chasing Jack down the Beanstalk!
