Happiness is…experiencing the beauty of nature that exists around us through simple ways. Easier said than done? Not at all! Relax and rejuvenate yourself with these 8 nature related activities which you can enjoy with your kids.

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the Earth.” – Henry David Thoreau

I truly believe that some of the best experiences one can have in life comes for free, but do we really give much importance to them? Our busy lives often make us overlook the priceless and the blissful moments that one should appreciate with nature.

Having said that, it brings me to the topic of sharing my experience of some beautiful and fun moments that I enjoyed while recently visiting my hometown, Kerala. I had the time of my life there with my little one Rey, making him explore and do a lot of nature related activities which we usually miss in the midst of our city life.

Moreover, to have a home surrounded with beauty that allows you to breathe the fresh air, drink the purest form of water, munch on farm fresh food that resonates with my childhood memories and being to able to share it all with Rey, means a lot. With this in mind, let me take you through a few fun activities that we had a blast doing.

1. Frozen Suncatcher

This has been the best of our activities and I must say the feel when you look at it, is absolutely rejuvenating.

All you need to do is:

  • Gather some flowers, leaves and twigs of different variants.
  • Pour in some water in a circular vessel.
  • Put the collected items in the water along with a rope so that once it’s frozen you can hold or hang the beauty.
  • Allow it to freeze and feel the magic once ready.

We hung it on one of the branches and admired the sun kissing our frozen suncatcher, as the water dripped slowly…drop by drop.

2. Nature Art at its Best!

This one’s all about art and fun. Get those little hands right into nature with this engaging activity that is sure to keep the kids happy for a while.

All you need to do is:

  • Gather some dry leaves, stones, pebbles etc. – essentially things that can be collected from your garden.
  • Start making faces using the stuff you have collected.
  • This is super fun and helps the kids in expressing various emotions in no time.

Take it to the next level by enabling them to create stories, it’s sure to get their imagination running.

3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Make the Best use of Waste

It is said that nothing goes waste in a coconut tree. I believed it when we did our next project.

All you need to do is:

  • We collected the tips of tender coconuts which were lying around, and sat down to do some fun art.
  • I couldn’t stop admiring the beauty of nature and natural things (I mean just look at it, the tip of the tender coconut once removed is already carved out in the shape of a flower…amazing, right?!).
  • We then painted these flowers with different colours to make it look vibrant.

It was so beautiful, and nothing less than perfect to go in a vase adorning that cute little corner of our home.

4. Picnic Time!

To have a picnic surrounded by the woods, with fresh air all around and to hear the birds chirping is magical. As I mentioned, the most wonderful things in life is free, if we really take out time to know and cherish them.

This is a must-do activity if you have a little garden or a backyard in your home.

All you need to do is:

  • Find the perfect spot, lay down a mat, get your picnic basket and some board games or movies.
  • You’re set to create another memorable moment for your album.

5. DIY Twig Art

This is yet another art related activity of mine. It is quite simple.

All you need to do is:

  • Pick up a twig or a broken, light weight branch.
  • Give it some colour – don’t forget to be as creative as you want, to make it a masterpiece.
  • Once colored, let it dry and before you know it, you’ll have a lovely piece of art ready to be displayed in your home!
  • You can try placing it in a vase to deck up the corner of your living room.
  • We had put some fairy lights onto it, added some artificial leaves and flowers and then the most beautiful part – putting on a few of our favourite memories that we captured. As I had the images in smaller shape, it was perfect for me to hang on the branches.
  • To give a personal touch, I also put a few happy lines and quotes here and there.

Let me give you another idea regarding this. You may also use this as a jewelry holder, on which you can hang your chains and bangles among other items.

6. DIY Organic Photo Frame

You are sure to thank me for this idea just as I did to someone for sharing it with me. It feels divine to come up with such creativity using natural things. The best part is that kids are sure to learn a lot of skills in the process and most priceless, is their smile.

All you need to do is:

  • Collect 8 sticks (2 for each side), tie them with a string at the edges to make them hold strong.
  • Once you do this, the frame is ready!
  • Now, all that needs to be done is decorate it.

Choose from pretty flowers, leaves, shells and more and let your creativity take over. Once you’re done decorating it, your organic photo booth is ready.

7. Swinging Along between the Trees

Don’t miss out on this wonderful experience of swinging in the midst of the woods, embracing the fresh air and living in the moment.

All you need to do is:

  • Tie a rope on two adjacent, yet little distant trees.
  • For the seat, we used a pillow and then it was only fun from thereon.

Try it out and don’t forget to capture these moments, they make for great memories when your little ones are all grown up!

8. A Walk to Remember through Nature

There is nothing more special than holding your little one’s hand and walking through the woods . Rey and I had the best time walking together singing – “You & I in this beautiful world.. green grass blue sky…”. Long walks with never ending conversations, looking at the beautiful trees & fruits, admiring the process of their growth, catching butterflies, flower hopping, little cats meowing, birds enjoying their nesting, collecting different shades of leaves and flowers, admiring the colour of every element in nature that God has created…and so much more. While we walked, we gathered ideas for all the nature related activities that can be done.

Enjoy this moment before those tiny hands are not tiny anymore.

As we did this at my home in Kerala, I showed my childhood pic to Rey of swinging at the same place when I was a kid. Believe me, one can never be short of stories to narrate to your little one and I recollected my fun childhood days as stories to Rey.

While penning down all these activities, I was wondering that these ideas can be perfect for an organic themed birthday party… what say?

A nature walk till your venue, a perfect picnic spot with some DIY tents, a flower decorated swing to make our little munchkins happy, some twig decor accompanied with a coconut flower coloring activity for the little hands, a natural and organic photo booth and some plants as return gifts with yummy food on organic plates, of course! Sounds cool, right?!

At the end of the day, we all have one thing in common, something that we we cannot deny…and that is ‘Mother Nature’. And it is our duty to nurture and preserve it, and value each and every creation, while exploring and enjoying their beauty. It really is a beautiful life and even through the tough times, where everything has changed, the only thing that still remains untouched is the sun, the seasons, the moon and everything that nature showers upon us.

Here’s hoping for a better tomorrow soon. Lets all be at home, be grateful for each and every day that we wake up and pray for the world. Remember, we are not stuck at home, we are safe at home.

Stay Safe.
