Trips are great fun but leaving your pet behind while you go and have fun can be a bit of a drag. Luckily, there are quite a few ways in which you can enjoy a fun vacation alongside your favorite friend! It just takes a little preparation.

The following tips will help you get ready for a trip with your pet and make the process as seamless as possible.

1. Stay at a Pet-Friendly Location

First and foremost, you need to make sure the place you’re staying at will welcome your pet. Many hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs do not allow pets of any kind. Always check beforehand to make sure that there won’t be any issues.

On top of that, it is also a good idea to check for a pet cleaning fee, any pet deposits (refundable or otherwise) and to see if there is a limit on the number of pets you can bring. Most places are flexible, but you don’t want to find yourself at one that is not!

2. Pack the Proper Food

While it can be tempting to change your pet’s diet during travel, it should be avoided when possible. Consistency is important, especially when dealing with a dog or cat that is used to a certain type of nutrition.

Always pack your pet’s favorite food and treats when planning to take them on a trip. You don’t need to go overboard and there will almost always be places to shop; but familiar food ensures your pet will get all the nutrition they need.

3. Prep Their Carrier

Unless you have a pet that can sit in the backseat, you’re going to need a pet carrier for your journey. Purchase one that has plenty of ventilation and make sure there is room for your pet to stand up or move around. You don’t want them to feel too cramped.

If your pet is not normally used to a carrier, introduce them to it a few weeks before your holiday. That will make them more comfortable with it and make it much easier to get them inside when you’re ready to go.

4. Bring Toys

No matter where your travels take you, it is important to ensure your pet stays engaged throughout the journey. There are several ways to do that, but none are more efficient than toys. Always pack your pet’s favorite games and don’t be afraid to use them during your travels.

In that same vein, it is a good idea to put aside time to run around or play with your pet. Short walks or running around a park can go a long way towards making them feel more comfortable in a new area.

5. Talk to Your Vet

Last but not least, always consult with your veterinarian before taking your animal companion away on a trip. Even if you’re not going far, it is hard to know what type of microbes, pests, or germs they will come in contact with.

Tell your vet where you’re going and what you’ll be doing once you get there. They will let you know if you need to take any special steps or go prepared with any particular kind of medicine along with what to do should a problem arise.

Vacations are fun, and that fun doubles when you bring your pet along for the ride. Though many people shy away from taking their furry friends on a fun journey, all it takes is a little preparation and know-how to make sure everything goes as planned.
